CHAPTER 5
DARK HAPPENINGS
Narrator: It was already 5 pm, and Sarah was inside Starbucks with her close friend and also my other good friend Maja Salvador. They were sitting at a table across from one another drinking hot coffee.
Maja: So, kasama mo ba si Jay bukas sa Disneyland?
Sarah: Oo. Bakit?
Maja: Wow, ang swerte mo naman. Eh paano ka babayad kung mahal na mahal ang precio dun?
Sarah: Din a kailangan, noh? Meron akong ibigan na ng trabajo sa Disneyland.
Maja: Eh mabuti.
Sarah: Sama ka ba?
Maja: Di pwede. May pasok ako buong araw.
Sarah: Ha? Hanggang anong horas?
Maja: From 10 hanggang 8 sa gabi.
Sarah: Susko! Eh anong horas yun break mo?
Maja: May half hour break ako sa pag tapos yun second class ko.
Sarah: Eh mabuti. Anong horas nga?
Maja: 1:30 to 2. Bakit?
Sarah: La lang.
Maja: Ay… birthday pala ni Jay ngayon, ah?
Sarah: Mars, hindi. Akala ko rin birthday niya ngayon eh. Bukas pala.
Maja: Ah ganun ba? Sana tinawagan ko siya ngayon.
Sarah: May pasok pa siya raw.
Maja: Ha? Hanggang anong horas?
Sarah: Sabi daw 5:50.
Maja: Ahh ganun?
Narrator: Suddenly, a blackout occurred in Starbucks, as the people were in sudden panic, including the two lovely girls.
Sarah: Ahh, ng blackout!
Maja: Dyos ko… (looks around) Paano naman nangyari ‘to?
Sarah: (looks out window, noticing every lamppost went off as well) Yun lamppost sa labas… patay rin lahat.
Maja: Ha? (looks out window with her) Bigla ng wala lahat ang ilaw. Sars, tatakot ako.(holds her tightly on the arm)
Sarah: Wag ka tatakot. Kaya natin ‘to.
Narrator: But then a loud rumble of some rap music sounded as a white car passed by Starbucks, and multiple gunshots, two of them from machine guns as shown out the windows of the car, were fired, causing the windows to break.
Sarah: Duck!! (as she grabbed onto Maja as both of them ducked under the table)
Narrator: Everyone else in the building ducked as well. Seconds later, the firing ceased, and the music faded away as the car disappeared.
Sarah and Maja got back up, looking out the shattered windows.
Maja: Na wala na ba?
Sarah: (calmly) Wala na.
Maja: (frightened expression) Sarah…
Sarah: O? (holds her on the shoulder)
Maja: Gusto ko aalis na tayo dito.
Sarah: Eh saan tayo pupunta?
Maja: Oo.
Narrator: Then one of the male workers, a white one at the counter, spoke on the mic.
Male worker: Ladies and gentlemen, we have just experienced a total blackout here in Fullerton. So what we want us to do is to carefully leave this building. Please stick to one another. We don’t want us going out there on the streets alone. Sorry also about the gunshots, so as we walk out there, remember to stay with one another. Understood?
Narrator: There were some “yes” and “yeah” responses afterwards.
Sarah: Sasabay tayo, ha? (as Maja nods)
